Second one-day international, Mirpur: New Zealand 212-9 bt Bangladesh 137 (42.4 ov) by 75 runs
Oram claimed two wickets and two catches as well as top scoring |
New Zealand squared their one-day series with Bangladesh with a 75-run win in the second match in Mirpur. In reply to the visitors' 212-9, where Jacob Oram top-scored with 75 not out, Bangladesh were all out for 137. New Zealand began poorly, going from 31-0 to 45-4, before Oram turned things around with his match-winning innings. Bangladesh struggled after Kyle Mills had Tamim Iqbal lbw for a duck from the second ball of the innings, and they were all out with seven overs left. After being put in to bat, New Zealand made a faltering start, with Syed Rasel taking the wickets of their three top-order batsmen. Brendon McCullum, Jamie How and Jesse Ryder all went in quick succession, and when Scott Styris was caught without scoring, the home side must have fancied their chances of a second win over the Kiwis in a week. Daniel Flynn and Ross Taylor put on 41 runs for the fifth wicket, before Flynn was clean bowled for 25 and Taylor was caught at backward point. When captain Daniel Vettori was caught and bowled by Naeem Islam, New Zealand were 115-7 and it was left to Oram to get them out of trouble. This he did in spectacular fashion, smashing 25 runs off Abdur Razzak in the final over to help his side to a more respectable total. The early loss of Iqbal was a disastrous start for Bangladesh, and when Mills added the scalp of Mushfiqur Rahim it fell to Junaid Siddique and Mohammad Ashraful to try and salvage things. They put on 53 runs but took 17.2 overs to do it before Siddique was caught off the bowling of Tim Southee. As long as Ashraful was at the crease there was hope, but Oram had him caught behind in the 37th over. He added the wicket of Razzak and wrapped up the victory when he caught Mashrafe Mortaza off the bowling of Mills. Vettori was pleased with his team's performance and said: "I think we bowled and fielded very well. Bangladesh at the start put pressure on us. "I think when you lose the first game and put a mediocre total on the board than there are some concerns. So we were a little bit nervous in the dressing roomand we started wondering about going down 2-0 on a series we should win."
