Islands will face European elite

Jersey under 19's beating Guernsey in 2007
Jersey and Guernsey could face each other in Northern Ireland

Jersey's and Guernsey's Under-17s cricketers will become the first island sides ever to play in a top flight European tournament next week.

The two islands are in action in the European Division One Under-17s tournament in Northern Ireland.

Guernsey are in Group A along with Scotland and Denmark while Jersey are in Group B with Ireland and the Netherlands.

The draw means the two islands could face one another in their final game.

Group matches are from 14-16 July with the final matches on the 17 July.

The two group winners will play each other for the title, with the sides second and third in one group playing the same placed side in the other group.

European Under 17s Division One Championships
Group A
Denmark v Scotland - 14 July
Scotland v Guernsey - 15 July
Guernsey v Denmark - 16 July
Group B
Ireland v Netherlands - 14 July
Jersey v Ireland - 15 July
Netherlands v Jersey - 16 July
It is the first time that island sides have competed at division one level in European cricket.

They were promoted to top flight status at Under-15s and Under-17s level in October after dominating the second tier of junior cricket last summer.

Jersey won the second division European titles at Under-23 and Under-19 levels, beating Guernsey along the way.

But Guernsey got their revenge in winning the final of the Under-15s tournament.

Ireland will be favourites having won five of the last eight European Under-17 titles.

They also have Paul Stirling in their side, who has been a regular member of the Irish senior team this year and played in their One Day International with New Zealand in Aberdeen earlier this month.
