Jersey’s young cricketers have won the first international competition they’ve ever played in – the European Under-19 Division 2 Tournament - and they beat Guernsey to take the title. The crucial match: Jersey v GuernseyWith both Channel Island sides undefeated throughout the tournament it came down to the very final match of the six day event to decide the overall winner - and it just happened to be an inter-insular battle. Jersey made a stunning comeback after a less than inspiring start to beat Guernsey by 4 wickets. ![]() Phil Hudson presents Tom Wherry with the trophy Things looked bleak for Jersey, who were chasing the Sarnian's 223-8, when they were just 28-2 after nine wickets. However, the island lads began to find their form and some superb batting from Ed Farley, who managed to make a century before his wicket fell, and Matt Hanley, 53-not out, upped Jersey's run rate and made winning a real possibility again. With five overs left Jersey had managed to come within 7 runs of their target, and after 46.2 overs they reached it and gave the home crowd a thrilling victory. And with their win over old rivals Guernsey the hosts had secured top spot in the entire championship. ![]() Jersey beat Guernsey by 4 wickets Winners groupAfter qualifying at the top of their group Jersey went on to enjoy a stunning nine wicket win over the Isle of Man, in the first of three second-stage matches to determine the winner of the event which is being staged in the island. Jersey bowled out the visitors for 169 in 46.4 overs before going on to reach their target of 170 runs with 20.2 overs to spare, and having lost just a single wicket. Jersey got off to the best possible start with Will Golder taking wickets with two consecutive balls to reduce the Manx team to 2-8. Economical bowling from James Perchard, 2-24, and Tom Gibbs, 2-28, helped to keep the island side firmly in the driving seat. ![]() Guernsey beat IOM by 76 runs For the second time in the tournament for Jersey their opponent's highest number of runs came from extras, on this occasion 42 including 18 wides and 19 no-balls. When Jersey's batsman took to the crease they never looked to be in danger, with opening partnership of Sam de La Haye and Tom Wherry putting 99 runs on the scoreboard before the island's first (and only) wicket fell. De la Haye was top scorer making 89-not out and Ed Farley notched up 39 runs not-out. Jersey's coach Chris Minty is hopeful that the boys could find glory in their first ever international tournament: "We've got a talented side, they can all contribute in their own way to the team performance...If we carry on playing in such a positive way we're going to do pretty well." Although he does admit that despite the lads success there is work to be done: ![]() Minty hopes positive play will lead to victory "There's still things we need to improve on and we've got to get them tightened up in order to make real progress. But we've played positive cricket all the way through and for me that's the only way to play." Guernsey then emulated Jersey's success with a 76 run win over Isle of Man to put themselves in contention for the title. The Sarnians bowled the Manxmen all-out for 142 runs having set a target of 216-8 in their allotted 50 overs. The two islands will now face each other at Grainville cricket ground from 11:30 on Friday 27 July. The path to the finalJersey opened their European competition with a convincing 137 run win over Italy. Having notched up 329-6 in their allotted 50 overs (a massive 115 of which came from Mark Chipperfield), the Jersey lads went on to bowl Italy all-out for 192 runs. Richard Blackburn took 3-37 and James Perchard 2-21. ![]() Jersey beat Gibraltar by 7 wickets Whilst the win was comfortable, there was some concern for the home team who gave away 55 runs in extras, including 34 wides. The Jersey side, comprising mainly of Victoria College students, then disposed of top seeds Gibraltar with a 7 wicket victory to cruise into the finals. After restricting the Gibraltarians to 130-9, with slow left-armer Perchard taking 3-21 and Chipperfield 2-9, Jersey reached their target with more than 20 overs to spare. Top batsman was Tom Wherry who made 53 before being caught out. Guernsey joined Jersey in the winners group by thrashing France by 197 runs, and Isle of Man secured a place in the final with a 7 wicket victory over Germany. last updated: 30/07/07 Have Your SayChris Voisin Paul jon Ben SEE ALSOYou are in: Jersey > Sport > Cricket > Weekend League > International title for young Jersey cricketers
