Asia Cup, Karachi India 284-3 (43.2 overs) beat Bangladesh 283-6 by seven wickets
Raina has yet to make his Test debut |
Suresh Raina hit a brilliant 116 not out off 107 balls as India beat Bangladesh by seven wickets with almost seven overs to spare in the Asia Cup. Raina, who took his tally to 301 runs in three innings, was supported by Gautam Gambhir who hit a quickfire 90 at the top of the innings. Bangladesh's total of 283 was built on the back of Alok Kapali, who hit five sixes in his 115 off 96 balls. However they lost wickets at regular intervals, though Tamim Iqbal hit 55. Despite the size of the victory, Bangladesh will be left with the feeling that their shoddy fielding cost them the game. Among three dropped catches, by far the most costly was by Mashrafe Mortaza off the bowling of Mahmudullah Riyad, the fielder dropping Raina on just 16. Raina and Gambhir added 139 for the second wicket, though Gambhir also had a let-off when dropped by Farhad Reza on 56. But 21-year-old Raina was imperious after his chance and brought up his second one day international century off 93 balls. The win leaves India well placed in the second phase of the Asia Cup on four points having brought through two points from the first group stage. Sri Lanka meet Pakistan in the second match of the Super League on Sunday as the teams vie for places in the Karachi final on 6 July. Bangladesh, for whom 24-year-old Kapali scored his first one day international century, will need to beat Sri Lanka in their next match on 30 June to keep alive realistic hopes of qualifying.
