York openers break league record

Cricket ball

York batsmen Dan Wilson and Duncan Snell set a new Yorkshire Premier League record of 324 runs for the first wicket against Castleford.

Their stand broke the record of 311 set last year by Scarborough openers Darren Harland and Kunwar Bansil.

Wilson made 214 and Snell 117 as York amassed 377-6. They won by 207 runs as Castleford were bowled out for 170.

Scarborough beat Sheffield Collegiate by three wickets while Harrogate lost to Sheffield United by seven wickets.

York's full eight-point win at Clifton Park means the defending champions stay second and keep up the pressure on early season leaders Barnsley.

York owe their complete win to the efforts of Alex Renton who took four for 44 and skipper Marcus Wood whose occasional leg-spin yielded four for 14. "The last time I was here I don't think he bowled a ball all season," said Wilson.

Scarborough were involved in an exciting finish at North Marine Road after Collegiate made 184-9, Simon Tennant taking 5-64.

The deposed first-wicket record holders Harland and Bansil both reached the 40s but Scarborough ended up needing 10 off the last over to win. They reached their victory target with two balls to spare, finishing on 186-7 to claim six points.

Harrogate stay bottom on no points after losing to Sheffield United at Bawtry Road.

Harrogate made 199 all out, but United's Andrew Hirst made 80 as his side reached 200-3 in 43 overs.

On Bank Holiday Monday York entertain Yorkshire Academy while Harrogate take on Scarborough, although the weather forecast is not promising.
