CB Series, game two, Brisbane:
India 267-4 (50 overs) v Sri Lanka - No result, rain Opener Gambhir paced his innings exceptionally well in Brisbane |
Gautam Gambhir hit a superb century but India's second Commonwealth Bank series game against Sri Lanka was abandoned because of heavy rain in Brisbane. India were 83-4 in the three-team triangular series match after Muttiah Muralitharan took two wickets.
Gambhir paced his innings superbly and finished on 102 not out, putting on 184 with Mahendra Singh Dhoni (88 not out), but rain meant Sri Lanka could not bat.
Sachin Tendulkar earlier passed 16,000 runs in one-day international cricket.
The 34-year-old reached the target in his 399th one-day innings and he is 3,800 ahead of his nearest challenger - Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya.
Gambhir said: "He's a legend. To get 16,000 runs - it's just incredible. Only a genius can do these things, and he's a genius."

But the CB series suffered its second washout after India's opener against Australia ended in a no result at the Gabba on Sunday.
India recalled explosive all-rounder Yuvraj Singh after a knee injury and Dhoni opted to bat first, with Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag putting on 68.
They fell in quick succession and then Gambhir enjoyed a life on just 11 when he was dropped by Kumar Sangakkara off Ishara Amerasinghe.
Muralitharan then stepped up the pressure, getting rid of both Yuvraj and Rohit Sharma cheaply in the 21st over to leave India reeling on 83-4.
Sharma stood his ground before walking after being given out for edging a catch to keeper Sangakarra and, even though it appeared he did not make contact, he was fined 10% of his match fee.
That brought together Gambhir and Dhoni, and the pair accumulated runs slowly to begin with, before cutting loose as the innings drew to a close.
Gambhir reached three figures with a boundary in the final over as India posted a stiff target, which Sri Lanka did not get the chance to chase.
The next match in the triangular event sees Australia take on Sri Lanka in Sydney on Friday.
Sharma was fined 10% of his match fee for showing dissent after being given out by umpire Rudi Koertzen
