Rain showers in Brisbane prevented an exciting finish and meant the day-night international between Australia and India ended in a no-result.

Regular stoppages saw India given 45 overs of batting, in which they were bowled out from the final ball for 194.

Australia had a twice-revised target, ultimately chasing 141 from 26 overs.

But with the score 51-3 from 7.2 overs, one further downpour proved terminal, giving each team two points from the Commonwealth Bank series opener.

India remain in Brisbane for match two, when they will take on Sri Lanka on Tuesday in the triangular tournament.

Brett Lee had a terrific match, taking 5-27 in nine overs with no Indian batsman reaching 40.

But Australia also struggled with the bat, particularly in the final passage of play when moisture in the wicket caused the ball to swing alarmingly.

Sree Santh had Ricky Ponting caught at second slip for a second-ball duck from a beautiful outswinger, and Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds were having to deal with some awkward deliveries when play was abandoned.

Earlier, Lee claimed his seventh one-day five-wicket haul as the home side looked to retain the momentum following Friday night's nine-wicket Twenty20 win in Melbourne.

He forced Sachin Tendulkar (10) to tread on his off-stump while playing back to a fast short ball, and also saw off Rohit Sharma and the debutant at number five, Manoj Tiwary.

Australia's own first-timer, Ashley Noffke, picked up the wicket of Robin Uthappa for five - India losing 4-11 from seven overs in a horrible middle-order collapse.

After a 90-minute rain break, skipper Mahendra Dhoni (37) and Harbhajan Singh (27) briefly sparkled before Lee removed both and the last wicket fell to a run-out.
