ICC World League, Nairobi: Scotland 254-8 beat Kenya 177 by 77 runs Haq hit five fours and a six in his 71 |
Scotland clinched a place in the ICC World League final with a 77-run win over Kenya in Nairobi on Sunday. Scotland won the toss and batted first and posted 254-8 in their 50 overs, with Majid Haq starring with bat and ball in the match.
He top-scored with 71, with Gavin Hamilton adding 58, before taking 3-26 from nine overs.
Scotland have a 100% record with four of the five rounds of matches completed in the six-team competition.
For the first time, Kenya's batting failed to perform and only a few late blows from Thomas Odoyo made the margin of their defeat less embarrassing.
Scotland's final group match is against Bermuda while Kenya have to beat Canada on Monday to qualify for Wednesday's final.
The winner of the tournament qualifies for the inaugural ICC Twenty20 World Championship to be played in South Africa in September.
Haq was delighted with the performance, and ventured it might make the Scottish press on Monday in preference to the rugby team's defeat at the hands of the Auld enemy England.
"I'm sure the rugby boys will bounce back but it is not often cricket makes headlines in Scotland so it's a great day for us," the 23-year-old said.
"It was a wonderful team effort and I am just happy to have been a part of that. We won't get carried away by this, though."
