Phil Simmons is poised to replace Adrian Birrell as Ireland coach |
Former West Indian batsman Phil Simmons is poised to take over as Ireland coach when Adrian Birrell steps down after the World Cup next March. The 43-year-old is expected to be offered the post after an Irish Cricket Union meeting on Monday night.
Simmons played 23 Tests and 143 one-day internationals for the West Indies from 1987 to 1999.
The Trinidadian was sacked as Zimbabwe coach last year after a poor series against New Zealand.
During his playing career, Simmons hit a half century for West Indies against Ireland in Downpatrick in 1991 and he was Man of the Match for Leicestershire against the Irish Irish three years later, when he made 64 and took a wicket.
It is believed Simmons was the unanimous nomination of the ICU interviewing panel.
Meanwhile, there is a doubt over the World League in Kenya in January.
It is reported that the stadia in Mombasa is still not up to standard to host one-day internationals.
Ireland are one of six Associate Nations scheduled to take part in the round-robin tournament.
South Africa is the likely alternative venue if Kenya is unable to host the event.
