Second Test, St Lucia, day three (stumps): West Indies 215 & 43-1 v India 588-8d
Kumble and Sehwag proved too hot to handle for the hosts |
Anil Kumble became Test cricket's fourth highest wicket-taker as India left West Indies on the rack before bad light and rain ended play in St Lucia. Kumble, who ended with 3-57, equalled Courtney Walsh's mark of 519 when he had Chris Gayle caught behind and went ahead when Dwayne Bravo edged to slip.
Virender Sehwag took 3-33, including a superb return catch to end the innings for 215, and the hosts followed on.
Gayle then edged Irfan Pathan behind as they ended on 43-1 - still 330 behind.
The opener was unusually subdued when the Windies resumed on 65-3, taking 23 balls before adding to his overnight 34 by slicing Munaf Patel over gully.

He took his partnership with Shivnarine Chanderpaul to 51 by swatting Kumble 10 rows back over mid-wicket but then edged a flatter ball off the back foot, which Mahendra Dhoni juggled before holding.
Chanderpaul went four balls later when Pathan trapped him leg before with a slower delivery which swung in late and Kumble was celebrating his achievement after Rahul Dravid took a neat low catch to account for Bravo.
Denesh Ramdin fell 13 balls later, caught by a diving Dhoni off Patel (3-51) before Sehwag had Jerome Taylor - who had launched him for four and six off successive balls - caught in the deep.

Pedro Collins edged to slip to record his 13th Test duck and Sehwag dived full length to his right to scoop up an Ian Bradshaw drive to bring the innings to a close in a hurry.
The second innings started just as badly, with Gayle driving lazily to depart for two, but Daren Ganga (24) and Brian Lara (15) showed determined defence to limit further damage before the skies darkened ahead of a torrential downpour.
Their team somehow escaped defeat in Antigua when all seemed lost but, with two days to go in St Lucia, will require something even more remarkable to avoid going 1-0 down.
Meanwhile, Collins has been reprimanded by match referee Jeff Crowe for celebrating the dismissal of VVS Laxman before the umpire had given him out caught behind on day one.
