Malik's maiden ton saves Pakistan
First Test, Colombo, day five (stumps): Sri Lanka 185 & 448-5 dec drew with Pakistan 176 & 337-4

Malik cools down during his marathon innings

Pakistan's Shoaib Malik registered his first ever Test century to secure a draw against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

He achieved the feat in his 15th Test match and ended the final day unbeaten on 148 after facing 369 balls.

Pakistan resumed on 88-2 and lost only two wickets as they reached 337-4 at stumps, chasing a record 458 to win.

Muttiah Muralitharan dismissed Inzamam-ul-Haq for 48 to take 3-94 and Farveez Maharoof had Faisal Iqbal lbw for 60 after a stand of 115 with Malik.

The match had been affected by rain with the first day being completely washed out and the final day losing 81 minutes in the morning session.

The third-wicket pair of Malik and Faisal survived without major alarm in the morning session on a pitch growing increasingly placid.

To fight back from 32 for five to be pushing hard for a win on the final day was a decent performance and there were a lot of positives

Maharoof did end Faisal's innings after the break but Malik continued to play cautiously and with good fortune.

He had been dropped on 14 the previous evening, could have been given out lbw on 70 and umpire Rudi Koertzen missed an edge on 94.

As soon as Malik had reached his painstaking century off 336 balls he opened up his shoulders and smashed 45 more runs off just 33 deliveries, including seven fours and two sixes off Muralitharan.

Inzamam fell two runs short of his 43rd Test fifty as Muralitharan, who bowled 42 overs, hoodwinked him into giving Tillakaratne Dilshan a catch at silly point.

That brought Abdul Razzaq to the crease and he added 20 runs to the total before the captains shook hands on a draw.

The second and final Test starts in Kandy on Monday.
