First Test, Chittagong, day four:
Sri Lanka 338 & 163-2 beat Bangladesh 319 & 181 by eight wickets
Vandort made sure Sri Lanka had few alarms |
Michael Vandort's unbeaten 64 eased Sri Lanka to an eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first Test. Requiring 163 to win in Chittagong, the tourists started day four on 25-0 and lost Upul Tharanga to the fifth ball.
But Vandort stroked 10 fours in his 105-ball knock to add 90 with Kumar Sangakkara (46) and 48 with captain Mahela Jayawardene, who hit 23 not out.
Jayawardene struck the winning boundary before lunch and the second and final Test begins in Bogra next Wednesday.
Bangladesh have now lost all six of their Tests against Sri Lanka, while their overall record is 36 losses in 41 Tests - with only one win against a weak Zimbabwe team.
They competed well until day three, when off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan ran through their batting to leave the tourists a small target.
And it proved straightforward even though Tharanga edged Syed Rasel to Shahriar Nafees at second slip early on.
Fellow left-handers Vandort and Sangakkara dominated the bowling before the latter gave a return catch to left-arm spinner Enamul Haque.
That brought in Jayawardene, who hammered five fours in a short space of time as Sri Lanka raced to victory with five sessions to spare.
Despite Muralitharan's haul of nine wickets, the man of the match award was presented to Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Ashraful, who made a superb 136 in the first innings.
