Second Test, Faisalabad, day four (close): Pakistan 588 & 152-1 v India 603
Younis has scored 199 plus two fifties in his three knocks this series |
Younis Khan struck his second fifty of the match as Pakistan reached 152-1 at stumps on day four of the second Test against India, a lead of 137. After Salman Butt fell for 24, Younis hit a fluent 13th Test fifty and shared an unbroken 100 with Kamran Akmal.
Earlier Mahendra Dhoni extended his maiden Test century to 144 in a stand of 210 with Irfan Pathan.
Pathan fell 10 short of a first hundred but a Harbhajan Singh cameo ensured a first innings lead of 15 for India.
The tourists resumed on 441-5 and added 50 runs at a blistering pace with Dhoni flaying pace spearhead Shoaib Akhtar for four boundaries in the sixth over of the day.
He was stumped after failing to get to the pitch of a leg-break from Kaneria, ending a superb 152-ball knock featuring 18 fours and four sixes.
Dhoni and Pathan began their pivotal sixth wicket stand with 107 runs still needed to save the follow-on.
A double century partnership followed in 45 overs to take their team within 97 runs of the Pakistan total of 588.
Having hit nine fours and two sixes in his fifth Test fifty, Pathan was beaten by an inswinger from Abdul Razzaq that caught the pad before it hit the bat.
Dhoni fell in the 132nd over, having added 210 with Pathan |
Anil Kumble added a watchful 15 before he was deceived in the flight by Kaneria, who tossed one up to invite the stumping, neatly executed by the nimble Akmal.
Harbhajan slogged Shahid Afridi over mid-wicket for six, then drove Kaneria straight back over his head for another mighty maximum, as 38 runs came from the first three overs after lunch.
Afridi was producing deliveries of 120kph, a similar pace to Mohammad Asif, and another quicker one beat Harbhajan and trapped him in front.
Zaheer Khan took India past 600 with a sweetly struck shot over long-on for six off Afridi, but the Pakistan all-rounder ended the innings with a stunning one-handed return catch low to his right to dismiss last man Rudra Pratap Singh.
In Pakistan's second innings, Butt had an early reprieve when VVS Laxman put down a regulation catch at second slip off Pathan.
Akmal compounded the frustration for India, pulling RP Singh through mid-wicket for successive boundaries as the fifty arrived from 70 balls.

Kumble had been brought into the attack after 10 overs and saw his second delivery driven for four by Butt.
With the first ball of his second over, however, he dismissed the left-hander, who tried to hit a fullish delivery over the top, caught it on the bottom of the bat and fired straight to the midriff of Sachin Tendulkar at mid-wicket.
Younis was still to score when he survived a confident lbw appeal from Kumble, but took the dominant role in the final session.
His fifty came from 73 balls when he pulled a full toss from Kumble to the boundary.
Akmal, who got an inside edge past the stumps early in his innings, blasted seven fours in his first 28 runs, but was more circumspect late in the day as he completed his second Test fifty.
He was able to pull his 10th four when Yuvraj Singh sent down a long hop in his exploratory final over of the day, and a quick two brought up the century partnership from 186 deliveries.
Meanwhile, Pakistan have asked all-rounder Shoaib Malik to return for the final day of the match.
Malik travelled to his hometown Sialkot on day three to be with his seriously ill father, but with Inzamam unlikely to feature because of back trouble, Pakistan want to ensure their batting is not compromised.
