Second Test, Faisalabad, day two (stumps): Pakistan 588 v India 110-1
Inzamam batted with a runner after treatment on his back |
Shahid Afridi and Inzamam-ul-Haq both hit centuries as Pakistan posted 588 in the second Test in Faisalabad. India made a confident reply but were still 478 behind on 110-1 after day two, with Rahul Dravid 26 not out.
Despite a bad back, Inzamam (119) hit his 25th Test ton, passing India coach Greg Chappell to move to 10th in the all-time list of world century-makers.
Afridi, on 85 overnight, cut loose in a career-best innings of 156 from 128 balls, with 20 fours and six sixes.
He was the first of three wickets to fall in 11 overs before lunch, though, caught off a towering top-edge to midwicket.
And Inzamam, forced to bat with a runner, looked far from his usual fluent self, finally feathering a delivery from Zaheer Khan behind.
Shoaib Akhtar shared a 58-run stand with Inzamam for their eighth wicket and cut loose once his captain departed, with three sixes in a career-best 47 from 54 balls.
Virender Sehwag began India's reply bullishly, cutting Shoaib's first delivery to the boundary, and was lucky to survive a drop on 12 by substitute fielder Imran Farhat.
Farhat made no mistake in the over after tea, though, as Sehwag edged Abdul Razzaq to second slip to fall for 31.
VVS Laxman, unbeaten on 28 at the close, brought more patience in an unbroken stand of 71 that spanned 26 overs in worsening light.
Dravid hit Shoaib for four to take his side into three figures just before the close but the follow-on target of 389 was still a good way off.
Afridi smashed six sixes in his career-best innings |
Pakistan had begun the day on 379-4, with Razzaq joining Afridi at the crease as Inzamam underwent treatment.
Afridi went after the bowling with some lusty hitting to entertain the 15,000-strong holiday crowd before miscuing a sweep off spinner Anil Kumble to square-leg.
He hit seamer Irfan Pathan for two boundaries and pulled the same bowler for a powerful six over mid-wicket to reach his fifth Test century.
Twenty runs came in one over from Zaheer Khan, including three fours and a six, before he smashed Kumble for a six over long-on to surpass his previous Test best of 141 against India at Madras (Chennai) in 1999.
Wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal came in to follow Afridi's fireworks but lasted only two balls before falling to Kumble.
Inzamam then resumed his innings on 79 but saw Razzaq dismissed for 37 just after the burly Pakistan captain had reached three figures.
Debutant Rudra Pratap Singh had Razzaq caught behind to end with figures of 4-89.
