Pakistan set sights on huge total
Second Test, Faisalabad, day one (stumps): Pakistan 379-4 v India

Pakistan overcame Rudra Pratap Singh's impressive debut for India to set about building another big score on day one of the second Test in Faisalabad.

Left-armer Pratap Singh took three wickets, including dangermen Younis Khan (83) and Mohammad Yousuf (65).

But captain Inzamam-ul-Haq (79no) and Shahid Afridi put on an unbeaten 163 from 193 balls for fifth wicket.

Afridi took 20 off Irfan Pathan in one over late in the day to go to stumps unbeaten on 85 with his side 379-4.

Until then he had showed unusual patience in backing up his captain, his half-century coming off 63 balls.

Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first on a pitch looking as unhelpful for bowlers as that for the first Test, which yielded more than 1,000 runs.

Singh, one of two changes to the side, tasted his first success in the first hour when Shoaib Malik left his bat in the air as he ducked a short ball and was caught off the edge.

Salman Butt was caught behind off an inside edge from Zaheer Khan, another new arrival with former skipper Sourav Ganguly left out.

Younis and Yousuf, who put on 319 together in the first Test, wrested back the initiative with some attacking play, the latter lifting spinner Anil Kumble for a big six.

Younis was lucky to escape being run out at 11 when he was sent back by Yousuf, who played a drive to mid-on.

However, the stand was halted on 142 in mid-afternoon when Yuvraj Singh made a spectacular leaping catch at point to snare a Younis top edge.

Yousuf then wasted a chance to reach three figures when he carved a wide delivery to slip.

Looking to take a series lead with one match left after this, the hosts dropped seam bowlers Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Mohammad Sami for all-rounder Abdul Razzaq and Mohammad Asif.

Bright sunshine allowed the mandated 90 over of play for the first time all season in Pakistan, including three Tests against England.
