England trio in World squads
Sunil Gavaskar, Michael Atherton and Aravinda de Silva
Gavaskar, Atherton and De Silva spoke with other selectors by phone

England duo Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison have been named in both the Test and one-day squads for the Super Series games with Australia in October.

Selector Michael Atherton announced the 20-man squads, which were reduced from an original 30 that did not feature giant Durham paceman Harmison.

Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar are among other stars in both squads, while Kevin Pietersen wins a one-day place.

There will be three one-day matches and one six-day Test.

PLAYERS LEFT OUT
Test squad:
Andrew Strauss, VVS Laxman, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Danish Kaneria, Andre Nel, Herschelle Gibbs, Kumar Sangakkara, Chaminda Vaas, Ramnaresh Sarwan
ODI squad:
Darren Gough, Marcus Trescothick, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Shoaib Malik, Yousuf Youhana, Mark Boucher, Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas, Ramnaresh Sarwan

England skipper Michael Vaughan was named in the Test squad but Andrew Strauss was one of the 10 players omitted, with Marcus Trescothick left out from the original one-day party.

Sunil Gavaskar led the selection panel, joined by Atherton, Sri Lankan Aravinda de Silva, Clive Lloyd, Sir Richard Hadlee and South African Jonty Rhodes.

"The criteria was player status but also current form and record against Australia in Australia," Atherton explained.

Gavaskar added that it was not easy to finalise the squad from the original 30-man line-up.

"It was an almost impossible task to cut down the original squads to just 20 players," he said.

"To leave out players of the calibre of Laxman, Sarwan, Vaas, Strauss, Trescothick and Harbhajan Singh was very difficult."

West Indies skipper Shivnarine Chanderpaul, not in the original Test squad, forged his way into the 20 after averaging 77 in his last 13 Tests.

The three one-day games will take place on 5/7/9 October, with the one-off Test to take place from 14-19 October.

The squads will be reduced once more in August, when a 14 for the ODI team and 13 for the Test squad will be announced, and a captain, or captains, will also be appointed.

A World XI coach and management team will also be named.
