First Test, Brisbane, day three (close): Australia 435 & 283-2; West Indies 210
Ponting has made centuries in both innings in Brisbane |
Dominant batting by Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden carried Australia to a lead of 508 over West Indies in the first Test at Brisbane. Ponting made 104 not out, his second century of the game, and Hayden hit 118 as they reached 283-2 at the close.
Shane Warne had earlier ripped through the tail for figures of 5-48 as West Indies were bowled out for 210, a first innings deficit of 225.
It was the 33rd time Warne has taken five wickets in a Test innings.
Skipper Ponting chose not to enforce the follow-on and Hayden and debutant Mike Hussey launched Australia's second innings with an opening stand of 71.
They were separated when Hussey, who made 29, pulled a ball from off-spinner Chris Gayle to Corey Collymore, who had dropped him earlier in his innings.
West Indies had to wait another 44 overs for their next success as Hayden, who survived a chance to Marlon Samuels at gully on 54, and Ponting added 187 for the second wicket.
None of the four West Indies seamers could contain them so Gayle was given an extended bowl.
And he finally achieved the second breakthrough when Hayden was caught by Sarwan after hitting two sixes and 10 fours in his 163-ball innings, his 21st hundred in 74 Test appearances.
It was also his third in successive games following his 138 against England in the final Ashes Test and 111 against the World XI in the ICC Super Series.
Ponting, who had been caught in the slips off a Jermaine Lawson no-ball, reached his 25th century off 155 deliveries, with eight fours.
It made him only the third Australian after Doug Walters and Greg Chappell to score two hundreds in the same Test against West Indies, but he and Michael Clarke (14) accepted a light offer from the umpires shortly afterwards.
Warne claimed his third five-wicket haul at The Gabba |
It ended a day which had begun with West Indies resuming on 182-6 following a 45-minute rain delay.
Warne struck in the third over when Daren Powell attempted a cut and keeper Adam Gilchrist claimed a thin edge, his fourth catch of the innings.
Powell departed for four and although Fidel Edwards kept youngster Denesh Ramdin company for 40 minutes, he was eventually deceived by Warne and bowled behind his legs for two.
Collymore edged the first ball of Warne's next over to Clarke at slip and the sixth trapped Jermaine Lawson lbw, also for a duck, as Ramdin ran out of partners on 37 not out.
