McGrath eyes Test target
Glenn McGrath
Glenn McGrath is setting his sights on 600 Test wickets
Australia's pacemen Glenn McGrath is aiming for 600 Test wickets but batsman Darren Lehmann say he may have just one year left at the top level of the game.

McGrath returns to action in Saturday's first Test against Zimbabwe after a 10-month lay-off with an ankle injury.

He has taken 430 wickets in 95 Tests and aims to play on until the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

Lehmann, meanwhile, feels the grind of travelling to play international cricket is taking its toll.

The senior batsman, who has played in 18 Tests and 100 one-dayers, is the father of young twins and said time away from his family was difficult to endure.

"I'm enjoying the cricket, especially now," Lehmann told Australian Associated Press.

"But I'm not so much enjoying the travelling any more and being away from the family, so that's something I'll have to weigh up over the next six to 12 months and see where I'm at after that.

"Hopefully, I can get through this winter (with Yorkshire) and this summer and weigh it up then."

With the adjustments I've made, if all goes well hopefully I'll even be better than I was in the past
McGrath talking a big game

McGrath, though, has no intention of letting up and believes the lengthy lay-off has made his appetite for the game even keener.

"My goal now is the 2007 World Cup," McGrath told Sydney's Daily Telegraph.

"Before, I thought I wouldn't play that long but now I think it's a realistic goal.

"I feel so fresh and I've had such a good off-season that I feel it's probably added another couple of years to my career.

"With the preparations I've done and the adjustments I've made, if all goes well hopefully I'll even be better than I was in the past."

Australia have 41 Tests scheduled for that period, allowing McGrath the opportunity to greatly extend fast bowling records.

Should McGrath carry on until to World Cup in three years time, he seems well placed to become the first fast bowler to take 600 wickets - more than the existing leading paceman Courtney Walsh who retired with a tally of 519 wickets.

McGrath is expected to pass other great fast bowlers, Richard Hadlee (431) and Kapil Dev (434) in Zimbabwe to become the fourth-highest Test wicket-taker of all time.

Australia open their tour on Monday with a two-day match against the Zimbabwe Academy in Harare.
