Pakistan overlook Waqar
Waqar Younis
Waqar was sacked after a disappointing World Cup
Former captain Waqar Younis has been left out of Pakistan's provisional squad for the series against India.

"We have selected the probables after carefully studying the current form and fitness of the players," said chief of selectors Wasim Bari.

"But that does not mean that the teams for the matches against India would be selected from this list only."

All-rounder Azhar Mahmood has also been left off the list, which will be trimmed to 14 for the Tests on 8 March.

Waqar has not featured since last year's World Cup but Bari had hinted at a possible return for the pace bowler when he returned to the job last month.

His successor, wicket-keeper Rashid Latif, and veteran leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed were also overlooked.

But off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq has a chance to regain his place in the Test side for the first time since September.

The squad will take part in a training camp in Lahore from 24 February, but they could still be joined by leading performers in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

Pace bowler Rao Iftikhar and batsman Bazid Khan - son of former captain Majid Khan - are the only uncapped players in the camp.

Pace bowler Shabbir Ahmed has been included even though his bowling action is currently under review after he was reported during a one-day match in New Zealand.

Pakistan probables: Imran Farhat, Taufeeq Umar, Yasir Hameed, Yousuf Youhana, Inzamam-ul-Haq (capt), Asim Kamal, Misbah-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Bazid Khan, Faisal Iqbal, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Malik, Saqlain Mushtaq, Danish Kaneria, Moin Khan (wkt), Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Shabbir Ahmed, Umar Gul, Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan, Rao Iftikhar, Shadab Kabir
