Tour match, East London, (day two, stumps)
West Indies 278 & 168-3; Border 251 Sarwan has the chance to hit a century some time on Sunday |
Adam Sanford staked a claim for a place in the West Indies Test side by taking 5-53 at Buffalo Park. Pace bowler Sanford, making his first appearance of the tour after replacing injured Omari Banks, was backed up by some excellent catching.
But it was wrist spinner Dave Mohammed who dismissed Pieter Strydom, who top-scored for the home side with 74.
Mohammed returned figures of 3-89 as West Indies secured a slender first innings lead of 27.
Border lost three wickets for three runs after reaching 100-2 as Sanford cut through their middle order.
He trapped Steven Pope lbw for 28 and followed up by removing Justin Kreusch and Laden Gamiet in the space of three deliveries.
Strydom and Abongile Sodumo steadied the innings with a stand of 81.
But from a strong position of 224-6, the provincial side lost their way at the end as Mohammed struck form.
West Indies then had 42 overs of batting in the second part of the day in which Ramnaresh Sarwan hit a morale-boosting and much needed 71 not out.
However, there was some concern for the tourists as opener Wavell Hinds continued his poor run of form when he was out for a single.
Hinds had a poor Test in Johannesburg and made just 15 in the first innings here.
Only one day remains in this match and West Indies have a chance of forcing a win which would give them some confidence ahead of the Durban Test on Boxing Day.
