Second Test, Peshawar, day three: Bangladesh 361 & 52-4 (at close); Pakistan 295 Kapali was all smiles after his treble |
Bangladesh are in danger of squandering a good position after achieving a first innings lead for the first time in a Test. Pakistan conceded a lead of 66 as leg-spinner Alok Kapali claimed a hat-trick by polishing off their tail with the wickets of Shabbir Ahmed, Danish Kaneria and Umar Gul.
But they hit back with a vengeance as paceman Shoaib Akhtar added to his six-wicket haul in Bangladesh's first innings, by removing Javed Omar and Hannan Sarkar with the new ball.
Gul struck a crucial blow for the home side by having in-form Habibul Bashar lbw for 28 and Mohammad Ashraful followed before the close to leave Bangladesh in danger of collapse.
Pakistan resumed on 134-2 but their hopes of a big total were undermined, in the initial stages, by left-arm spinner Mohammed Rafique.
He dismissed Taufeeq Umar for 75 and withstood an onslaught from Inzamam-ul-Haq, who struck two fours and a six off him in quick succession, to trap him lbw on the back foot for 43.
Rafique enjoyed further success after lunch as Rashid Latif was stumped by Khaled Mashud for 40 and Shoaib Malik went without scoring.
Youhana used his feet to take on the Bangaldesh spinners |
But he had to settle for figures of 5-118 from 45 overs as Kapali claimed the wickets of Shabbir and Kaneria with successive balls in his second over, and had Gul lbw with a flipper from the first ball of the next.
Yousuf Youhana was left unbeaten on 64, after collecting 10 fours and a six in a 159-ball innings.
The mood in the Bangladesh dressing room was exultant, but they soon had reason to calm down as Omar followed his first innings 119 with a first ball duck, caught behind by Latif off Shoaib.
Sarkar went for seven and Bangladesh were 43-4 when Ashraful and Bashar fell to successive balls - the last of one over from Kaneria, and the first of the next from Gul.
Rajin Saleh was five not out at the close, with Kapali on four, with their side holdsing a lead of 118.
