Hall appeals against ban
Andrew Hall
I am extremely concerned at the inconsistent manner in which that code has been applied
UCB chief exec Gerald Majola
South Africa have lodged an appeal against the two-Test ban given to Andrew Hall following an incident against Pakistan in Lahore last week.

Both Hall and captain Graeme Smith were suspended for the deciding one-dayer of the five-match series on Sunday after a fracas in which Hall was ruled to have elbowed Pakistan batsman Yousuf Youhana.

In addition, Smith was fined 50% of his match fee, a penalty given to Youhana also.

South African management were upset at the severity of Hall's sentence, and it was confirmed on Sunday an appeal had been lodged.

Former High Court judge Oliver Popplewell will hear the appeal within a week.

"Popplewell is the England and Wales Cricket Board's nominated member of the ICC's Code of Conduct Commission and has been appointed as appeals commissioner for Hall's case," an International Cricket Council statement said.

"On making his decision, the appeals commissioner will provide a written decision to the ICC which will be forwarded to all parties concerned.

"He has the power to increase, decrease, amend or otherwise substitute his own decision for that of the original adjudicator."

All three players were charged after ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed viewed video evidence.

The incident preceded the antics of South Africa all-rounder Shaun Pollock in the third match on Tuesday, which the visitors won to reduce Pakistan's series lead to 2-1.

Pollock was fined his entire match fee for showing dissent to umpire Darrell Hair.

The punishment metered out to the three South Africa players in Pakistan has drawn an angry response from United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB) chief executive Gerald Majola.

"While I in no way condone any behaviour which breaches the Code of Conduct, I am extremely concerned at the inconsistent manner in which that Code has been applied, particularly this year," he said.

"There are several examples of this and I shall be taking the matter up through the correct channels at the ICC."
