Third ODI, Faisalabad: Pakistan v South Africa Kallis' innings was ended by a Shoaib Akhtar scorcher |
South Africa achieved their first win of the one-day series in Pakistan with the help of the Duckworth-Lewis method. They were 221-6 after 45 overs, chasing a target of 244, when bad light ended play with Pakistan having failed to bowl their overs in the allotted time.
The outcome was a 13-run win for South Africa, who now trail Pakistan 2-1 with two games left.
Jacques Kallis (62) and Graeme Smith (51) shared a century stand to lay the foundation for South Africa's win.
"It was sheer bad luck but we bowled slowly and paid the price," said Pakistan's stand-in captain Yousuf Youhana.
The home side went into the game without regular skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq, who was ruled out by a hamstring strain.
South Africa's team showed two changes with Herschelle Gibbs, fit again after a stomach muscle injury, and Andre Nel taking over from Neil McKenzie and Alan Dawson.
Youhana chose to bat first after winning the toss and Hameed and Mohammad Hafeez launched their innings with a half century stand.
They put on 52 before Hafeez was caught off Andrew Hall for 20 at the start of the 16th over.
The tourists gave the new ball to Nel instead of Makhaya Ntini but it did not pay off as his opening five overs cost 28.
And it was Ntini, introduced as second change, who made an important breakthrough when he had Youhana caught behind for 18.
Hameed was next to go for 72 when he gave a catch to Gibbs, and Peterson followed up with the wicket of Younis Khan for nine.
Faisal (22), Shoaib Malik (18) and Rashid Latif (14) made useful contribution but it was Abdul Razzaq who added the required acceleration over the closing overs with 46 not out off 38 balls.

South Africa made a poor start in reply when Gibbs was caught behind off Shoaib for four, but Smith and Kallis then added 100 for the second wicket.
Smith eventually edged a catch to Latif off Razzaq and they suffered further setbacks when Kallis and Boeta Dippenaar, who was bowled by Hafeez for three, fell in quick succession.
Shoaib also bowled Mark Boucher for 24 for figures of 3-31 from eight overs, and Andrew Hall (10 not out) and Shaun Pollock were at the crease when the umpires offered the light.
More than 3,000 troops and police were on duty in and around the stadium during the game as security was stepped up following the recent assassination of an MP in Islamabad.
