Pakistan took less than seven overs on the final morning in Lahore to record their first ever home Test win over South Africa.

Shoaib Malik hit the winning boundary as they knocked off the 24 runs needed for the loss of Taufiq Umar, who was bowled by Paul Adams for 63.

They finished on 164-2, with Yasir Hameed 20 not out and Malik on eight.

"It was a total team effort. Everyone contributed in this important victory," skipper Yousuf Youhana commented.

"We started the match on the wrong foot with our captain Inzamam-ul-Haq ruled out due to injury, but the young boys did tremendously well."

The outcome was not in any doubt as Pakistan resumed on 137-1 and South African skipper Graeme Smith did not utilise his three seamers.

Instead he and Adams did the bowling and it paid off when Adams produced a delivery which kept low to dismiss Taufiq, who had made 111 in Pakistan's first innings.

"I was under pressure because this was my comeback match but I played with a positive approach and that paid off," Taufiq said afterwards.

It only delayed the inevitable after after Hameed had collected three boundaries, Malik despatched a ball from Smith to the long-on fence to seal the win.

South Africa must now win the second Test in Faisalabad, which starts on Thursday, to avoid losing a series against Pakistan for the first time.

"Monday was a crunch day and we failed to put runs on the board. But we will re-group to come back in the second Test," said Smith.

Pakistan must manage without Youhana in Faisalabad because of a hamstring problem, but Inzamam has recovered from a similar injury and will lead the team.
