Tour match, Perth: Zimbabweans 330 & 146-6 dec drew with Western Australia 207-6 dec & 266-4 Captain Hussey top-scored with 79 in double-quick time |
Zimbabwe warmed up for this week's first Test with a hard-fought draw against Western Australia. Set up by Mike Hussey's 79, the Warriors were just four runs short of victory when time ran out.
The hosts declared their first innings on 207-6 overnight and Zimbabwe did likewise having reached 146-6 in their second innings.
Opener Trevor Gripper hit a patient 54 and then took two wickets with his off-spin.
Promoted up the order, Ryan Campbell hit a run-a-ball half-century, sharing a second wicket stand of 128 in 100 balls with skipper Hussey. And Peter Worthington then clubbed 45 from 27 balls before lofting Sean Ervine to long off.
But with 15 needed off the final over, fifth-wicket pair Marcus North and Shaun Marsh, whose father Geoff is the Zimbabwe coach, could manage just 11.
Earlier, Paul Wilson took his wicket tally for the match to seven as the tourists struggled to score fluently on the pacey Perth wicket.
Mark Vermeulen, batting at three in the order to make way for the recalled Gripper, was the next-highest scorer with 30.
Zimbabwe's first ever Test in Australia starts at the Waca on Thursday.
