First Test, Perth, day five: Australia beat Zimbabwe by innings and 175 runs Hayden: Australia's match winner |
Australia finally sealed an innings and 175-run victory in the morning session on the final day of the first Test in Perth. The result condemned Zimbabwe to their 10th straight defeat.
But the end did not come as quickly as the Aussies would have hoped.
A dogged ninth wicket stand by captain Heath Streak (71 not out) and Raymond Price (36) saw the pair put on 74 runs and stay at the crease for over two hours.
Left-arm wrist spinner Darren Lehmann appeared to have clinched victory, taking the catch of Price off his own bowling, but umpire Peter Willey disagreed.
He felt the catch was off a bump ball but TV replays showed that the Australians were unlucky and it was a legitimate caught and bowled.
Then minutes later Brett Lee clean bowled Heath Streak only to have his celebrations cut short by the no-ball call from umpire Srinivas Venkataraghavan.
Play was interrupted briefly by light rain but when play resumed it took only a further eight overs to bring the match to a conclusion.
The Zimbabweans' resolute defence finally cracked when Aussie skipper Steve Waugh took a catch off Andy Bichel to dismiss Price, giving the bowler figures of 4-73.
MacGill has been named in Australia's 14-man squad for the second Test, subject to proving his fitness.
But Gillespie misses out on the game, which starts in Sydney on Friday, and will be replaced either by Brad Williams or Nathan Bracken.
