First Test, Karachi, day one (close): Bangladesh 278-9 v Pakistan
 | Shoaib hit back after an expensive opening spell |
Pakistan fought back strongly to take marginal first-day honours after an opening session controlled by Bangladesh. Pakistan drew first blood when Umar Gul, one of four Pakistan debutants, claimed the early wicket of Javed Omar for one.
But a blossoming second-wicket partnership between Habibul Bashar and Hannan Sarkar saw the visitors go to lunch on 97-1.
The stand extended to 114 runs but was broken shortly after lunch when Sarkar was caught behind off Shabbir Ahmed for 41.
Bashar followed two balls later for 71 - his 13th Test half-century including 12 boundaries - as Shoaib made the first of his two strikes.
It signalled a good comeback for the fast bowler after he had conceded 22 runs in his first spell of four overs.
Shoaib grabbed his second when Sanwar Hossain was trapped lbw for 15, and when Rajin Saleh fell to Danish Kaneria 26 shortly before tea Bangladesh had lost four wickets for 53 runs.
Resistance came in the form of Alok Kapali, who put on 55 runs with keeper Khaled Mashud before falling to Kaneria for 46.
Skipper Khaled Mahmud came out hitting and sped to 14 off 11 balls before Kaneria (3-58) struck again to have him caught.
One over later Mashud was on his way, lbw to Umar for a painstakingly compiled 19, and there was time for Shabbir to remove Tapash Baisya for 10 before bad light stopped play with 83 overs bowled.
As well as Umar, Pakistan gave opener Mohammad Hafeez, batsman Yasir Hameed and Shabbir Test caps.
Bangladesh handed batsman Razin Saleh his first chance in Test cricket.
