Dravid and Laxman are set to renew their Test partnership

VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid shared a stand of 168 to lead Rest of India to victory in India's season-opener.

Dravid hit a patient 121 and Laxman 99 off 125 balls to defeat Sachin Tendulkar's domestic champions Mumbai by three wickets.

Overlooked by the one-day side, Laxman has not played for India since their last Test match, almost a year ago.

But the innings puts his name will be in the frame to face New Zealand in the forthcoming two-Test series.

India's selectors will check the pedigree of other candidates in two warm-up matches against the Black Caps, who arrive on Sunday for a tour that also includes a triangular one-day series.

Laxman, possible openers Wasim Jaffer and Shiv Sunder Das and back-up wicket-keeper Ajay Ratra will play for the Indian Board President's XI in the first three-day match, beginning on Friday.

And one-day specialist Mohammad Kaif gets the chance to re-state his Test credentials when he captains India A against the tourists from 2 October.

Rohan Gavaskar, son of legendary Test batsman Sunil, has also been named in the India A side after impressing on their tour of England recently.
