Irani Trophy, Madras, day two of five: Mumbai 297 & 11-0 v Rest of India 202 Virender Sehwag lost his leg stump after making 16 |
Spinner Ramesh Powar staked a claim for a Test place with 4-61 as Sachin Tendulkar's Mumbai XI moved into a strong position in the annual Irani Trophy match. Mumbai were 11-0 in their second innings at close of the second day in Madras, a lead of 106, after bowling out their opponents for 202.
National captain Sourav Ganguly, who made a four-ball duck after beginning his innings needing only 10 to reach 10,000 first-class runs, and his deputy Rahul Dravid were among Powar's victims.
It was a disappointing batting effort by the Rest, whose top six featured five Test players and Yuvraj Singh, a regular member of India's one-day side.
Dravid looked the most assured in making 41 before flicking a catch to Tendulkar at mid-wicket and Sanjay Bangar did his chances of an opener's berth in the fothcoming series against New Zealand no harm by batting for almost two and a half hours for 29.
But Yuvraj (27) and Parthiv Patel (26) were the only other batsmen to pass 20, with five wickets going down for just 36 runs in the middle of the innings.
Every member of Mumbai's attack claimed at least one wicket with seamers Ajit Agarkar (2-29) and Aavishkar Salvi (2-52) providing the main support for Powar.
Left with just four overs to bat out before the close, Vinayak Mane reached six not out and Wasim Jaffer made a single.
