Second Test, Jamaica: West Indies 4-0 v Sri Lanka 208 (close) Debutant Fidel Edwards claimed his first Test wicket |
West Indies debutant Fidel Edwards took five wickets as Sri Lanka stuttered to a lowly first-innings total on the first day of the second Test in Kingston. The 21-year-old from Barbados finished with figures of 5-36 off 15.4 overs, vindicating the selectors' controversial decision to pick him after only one first-class game.
Off-spinner Omari Banks and fast bowler Corey Collymore also claimed two scalps each as the home side reaped the rewards after winning the toss.
Kumar Sangakkara top-scored with 75 for Sri Lanka with Sanath Jayasuriya's 26 the next highest score off the bat.

"I really enjoyed myself out there. This really is a dream come true," Edwards said after he became the eighth West Indies bowler to take five wickets in his first Test.
Windies skipper Brian Lara said: "I am sure he (Edwards) knows this is the start of something big, but that he now has to work hard to maintain his strength and his fitness."
Lara's decision to bowl gained early reward with the wicket of Jayasuriya caught behind off Collymore down the leg-side after a stand of 38 with Marvan Atapattu.
After an erratic start from Jerome Taylor, Vasbert Drakes came on first-change to dismiss Marvan Atapattu for 15, fishing outside off-stump for Gayle to collect.
Edwards took his first wicket shortly before lunch to remove Mahela Jayawardene as Sri Lanka crawled to the interval at 77-3.
Banks removed captain Hashan Tillakaratne (13) and then Romesh Kaluwitharana (10) also succumbed to the 20-year-old off-spinner.
His inside-edge bounced off wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs's thigh for Marlon Samuels to snap up the rebound with a diving catch at backward short leg.

Just before the tea interval, Collymore bagged Kumar Dharmasena (6), who fended a catch to Samuels at gully. Sri Lanka limped to tea on 141-6 before Sangakkara and Chaminda Vaas added 51 early in the evening session.
But Edwards eventually made the breakthrough, trapping Sangakkara lbw after the Sri Lankan had faced 212 balls.
Edwards mopped up the remaining three wickets inside six overs before batsmen Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds saw out the day.
The teams lurched to a rain-affected draw in the first of the two-Test series in St Lucia last week.
