Sri Lanka stun Windies
Second ODI, Barbados: West Indies 312-4 lost to Sri Lanka 315-6 by four wickets

Sri Lanka pulled off a remarkable victory as they overhauled the West Indies' massive total in Barbados to record a winning 2-0 lead in the series.

After Brian Lara's thrilling century had guided the hosts to an imposing 312-4 - a record total in Barbados - the Windies looked strong favourites, but the Sri Lankans refused to be bowed.

In reply, all their top order chipped in and they started the last 10 overs needing 92 to win.

Upul Chandana then took charge and he cracked 89 off 71 deliveries to usher Sri Lanka to within sight of a stunning victory.

He fell with 20 still needed and despite Mahela Jayawardene also holing out the visitors kept their nerve and got home with three balls and four wickets to spare.

The West Indies had looked in a strong position after captain Lara scored his 17th ODI ton off just 95 balls before he was finally out for 116.

Smarting from a dismal effort from his team on Saturday, when they failed to get anywhere near a victory target of 202, Lara was determined to make amends immediately.

He won the toss and went out to bat in the 11th over after Wavell Hinds was trapped lbw by Chaminda Vaas for just 10.

Today was satisfying, but I won't be walking six inches off the ground saying our batting has clicked or anything like that. I'm looking for consistency

Sri Lankan captain

Vaas was convinced he had Lara caught behind on nought, but Kiwi umpire Billy Bowden gave the batsman the benefit of the doubt, and Lara needed no second invitation.

With fellow left-hander Chris Gayle, Lara then added 137 in 26 overs.

Gayle smacked 12 fours and two sixes being run out for 94 and once he had fallen Lara upped the rate with help from Marlon Samuels.

The pair needed just 54 balls to put on the first 100 runs of what was a scintillating partnership, and although Lara was finally dismissed Samuels finished on 56 not out from just 36 balls.

The record total looked like a winning one but Sri Lanka were always up with the run rate.

The top four all made more than 30 for Sri Lanka to keep them in touch but it was Chandana who did the damage for the visitors.

He took apart some poor bowling from the Windies and although he fell before the end he had already tilted the balance in Sri Lanka's favour.

In the end it was left to Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Dharmasena to usher Sri Lanka home to a stunning victory with three balls to spare.
