Hinds and Lara put on 174 for the second wicket with Hashan Tillakaratne relying almost exclusively on Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan for wickets.
In the event, the only wicket to fall before lunch came courtesy of a run out as Marvan Atapattu and Romesh Kaluwitharana combined to end the 143-ball innings of Hinds.
The Jamaican had hit eight fours and four sixes in his total of 113. It was his fourth century in Tests.
Lara was on 93 when the rains came in the middle session, ruling out any further play in the day.
By then, Muralitharan had struck to spell the end of Ramnaresh Sarwan for just seven, but a draw is almost inevitable from here on in.
