Teenage fast bowler Jerome Taylor has been named in the 14-man West Indies squad for the first Test against Sri Lanka on Friday. Should he make the starting line-up, Taylor, who turns 19 on Sunday, would be the 10th teenager to play Test cricket for the West Indies.
And he would be the youngest since 18-year-old batsman Alfie Roberts against New Zealand in Auckland in 1956.
Taylor made his international debut in the third one-day match against Sri Lanka last week at St. Vincent, taking 2-39 in a six-wicket win.
On Sunday, he finished with 2-22 for a West Indies President's XI against Sri Lanka.
Collymore gets a rare chance in a Test match |
Taylor made his debut in February for Jamaica in the regional first-class series, collecting 21 wickets in six matches at an average of 20.14.
He is one of four fast bowlers chosen for West Indies, along with Merv Dillon, Vasbert Drakes and Corey Collymore.
The final composition of the bowling attack will depend on the pitch, but Taylor is expected to start.
It is Collymore's first recall to the Test squad since his solitary match against Australia in 1999. He has played 42 one-day internationals since then.
Taylor and Collymore are the only two among the 14 who did not play in the four-Test series against Australia.
The Beausejours Stadium, just outside Rodney Bay in north St. Lucia, will become the eighth Test venue in the West Indies.
It opened last year and hosted two ODIs against New Zealand.
Sri Lanka, who won the one-day series 2-1, play a second a Test, starting 27 June in Jamaica.
West Indies squad: Brian Lara (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan, Omari Banks, Carlton Baugh Jr., Corey Collymore, Mervyn Dillon, Vasbert Drakes, Daren Ganga, Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Ridley Jacobs, Marlon Samuels, Devon Smith, Jerome Taylor.
