| Saturday, 21 December, 2002, 07:06 GMT India fightback stuns Kiwis Second Test, Hamilton, day three (stumps): New Zealand 94 & 24-0 v India 99 & 154
History was made as India dismissed the hosts for 94 in reply to their own 99 - the first time both sides have scored less than 100 in the first innings of a Test. New Zealand's total was also their lowest-ever against India, beating their previous worst of 100 at Wellington in 1980-81. And having fought back with the ball, India then posted a second innings total of 154 in the final session of the day. But the Black Caps reached 24 without loss before the close, with Mark Richardson 18 not out and Lou Vincent, dropped before he had scored, unbeaten on six. India took an improbable first innings lead earlier in the day as paceman Zaheer Khan grabbed a career-best five for 29. Khan removing both openers and claimed three more wickets after lunch as the Black Caps lost their last six wickets for 34 runs. Fellow left-armer Ashish Nehra chipped in when he removed Craig McMillan and Nathan Astle in successive balls. New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, who earlier took his 111th Test catch to move into eighth place on the all-time list, top-scored with 25. Bundled out And spinner Harbajan Singh also weighed in with two wickets as New Zealand were dismissed in just 38.2 overs. India had reached 40 for two by tea in reply, with Daryl Tuffey, who claimed four for 12 in the first innings, dismissing both Indian openers.
Jacob Oram also claimed four for 41, with Rahul Dravid top-scoring for India with 39, and Tendulkar contributing 32. Earlier, New Zealand polished off India's first innings in the first seven balls of the day, as the tourists were bundled out for 99 after resuming on 92 for eight. Shane Bond, who finished with four for 39, claimed the final wicket of tail-ender Ashish Nehra. It was India's lowest innings score since they made just 83 in the first Test against New Zealand in Chandigarh in 1999, a match which ended in a draw. Remarkably, a match that saw the first five sessions washed out by rain should be over inside four days. New Zealand: Stephen Fleming (captain), Mark Richardson, Lou Vincent, Craig McMillan, Nathan Astle, Scott Styris, Jacob Oram, Robbie Hart, Daniel Vettori, Daryl Tuffey, Shane Bond. India: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Virender Sehwag, Sanjay Bangar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Parthiv Patel, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Tinu Yohannan, Ashish Nehra. |
