The 33-year-old says he is "too tired" for the five-day game, but plans to give a more detailed explanation of the reasons behind his decision at a later date.

Latif hopes to hang onto his place in Pakistan's one-day side in order to play in next year's World Cup in South Africa.

After that, he plans to remain active in the game by helping youngsters achieve their potential.

"I will concentrate on my cricket academy and produce talent for Pakistan cricket," he said.

Latif made his debut in England in 1992, but his Test career suffered a hiatus after he made match-fixing claims against teammates following the 1994-95 tour to Zimbabwe.

He later gave evidence against some of his teammates to the Qayyum commission, one of two judicial inquiries conducted into allegations of corruption against Pakistan players.

Salim Malik and Ata-ur-Rehman received life bans as a result of the Qayyum inquiry, and six other players, including current Pakistan captain Waqar Younis, were fined.

Latif skippered the team in three Tests against South Africa and Zimbabwe in 1998, but was then overlooked again until last year.

He recently had to return home from the current tour to Zimbabwe because of a vertebrae problem in his neck.

It was originally thought that it might be a career-ending injury, but doctors in Johannesburg told Latif that treatment would bring about a full recovery.
