| Sunday, 24 November, 2002, 15:47 GMT Pakistan shine in the rain ![]() Wasim took his ODI wicket tally to 485 Second ODI, Bulawayo: Pakistan 344-5 (50 overs) beat Zimbabwe 140-6 (33 overs) by 104 runs (D-L method) Pakistan lead five-match series 2-0 Rain came to put Zimbabwe out of their misery as high-scoring Pakistan raced to a 2-0 series lead in Bulawayo. Chasing an unlikely 345 for victory, Zimbabwe were struggling badly on 140 for six after 33 overs when the heavens opened to halt play for the day. The Duckworth-Lewis method was used to declare the visitors winners by 104 runs.
Pakistan earlier amassed their second-highest score in one-day internationals, falling 27 runs short of the 371 Saeed Anwar's Pakistan hit against Kenya in 1996. It was also the second-highest score made against Zimbabwe by any team. Zimbabwe were brave losers in the first match on Saturday as they just failed to chase 303, but Pakistan upped the ante with a blazing display. Opener Saleem Elahi led the way with 107 off 111 balls, while Yousuf Youhana turned the screws later in the innings with 76 not out off just 34 balls. Elahi's century included 16 boundaries and was his first since the 102 not out he hit against Sri Lanka on debut in 1995.
After Pakistan won the toss, Elahi and Taufeeq Umar (76) put on 159 for the first wicket to lay the foundation for the run-spree that was to come. Youhana, who recorded a personal-best 141 in the first match, bludgeoned eight sixes and three fours. Pakistan scored off every over in the match, with Mluleki Nkala (none for 76) and Waddington Mwayenga (none for 74) coming in for harsh treatment. Zimbabwe's reply was in instant trouble as evergreen Wasim Akram reduced them to three for two. Potential match-winner Andy Flower (nought) was one of the batsman to fall and it did not get much better for Zimbabwe with Wasim going on to take another two wickets. But the hosts can take comfort from the form of 19-year-old Sean Ervine, who clobbered 61 off 41 balls in just his 11th appearance. Pakistan captain Waqar Younis claimed one scalp, but he will have to wait until Harare on Wednesday to take the wicket that will give him his 400th in one-day internationals. Zimbabwe: Grant Flower, Alistair Campbell (captain), Stuart Matsikenyeri, Andy Flower, Tatenda Taibu, Waddington Mwayenga, Richard Sims, Craig Evans, Mluleki Nkala, Sean Ervine, Barney Rodgers. Pakistan: Taufeeq Umar, Salim Elahi, Saqlain Mushtaq, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana, Shahid Afridi, Azhar Mahmood, Waqar Younis (captain), Wasim Akram, Kamran Akmal, Faisal Iqbal. |
