Tendulkar picked up the injury during his match-saving knock of 176 in the third and final Test against the Windies on Sunday.

Indian Cricket Board president Jagmohan Dalmiya said: "The hamstring strain injury is not too serious.

"But rest is needed to prevent further damage and rehabilitate the muscle so that he is free of pain.

"Sachin has therefore been advised to rest for the next three weeks."

Dalmiya said the selection committee had included Dinesh Mongia in place of Tendulkar.

Mongia, a left-handed batsman, would be a natural replacement in the middle order for India.

Despite Tendulkar's absence, India will still be strongly fancied to beat the West Indies in the one-day series.

In the new one-day rankings table, India are fifth, with the West Indies, who are also missing a star batsman in Brian Lara, seventh.

The series begins at Jamshedpur on 6 November.

The Calcutta Test ended drawn on Sunday, and India claim the series 2-0.

Sourav Ganguly chose to reflect on the successful Test campaign rather than Tendulkar's injury.

At one point it seemed West Indies would win, until Tendulkar and VVS Laxman (154 not out) turned things around.

Ganguly said: "Somebody has stood up and delivered in a crunch situation.

"It has been the feature of our cricket over the past 10 months and, hopefully, we can continue that.

"We were a bit down in this Test, but we fought back very well to save the game."

West Indies skipper Carl Hooper was pleased with his own team's recovery after suffering huge defeats in the first two Tests in Bombay and Madras.

"It is just a shame that we couldn't cap it off with a win," he said. "But for once, we put India under pressure."
