| Saturday, 2 November, 2002, 12:52 GMT Sachin stays focused ![]() Tendulkar forces evasive action from Wavell Hinds Third Test, Calcutta, day four: India 358 & 195-4 (at close); West Indies 497 Indian batting star Sachin Tendulkar insisted his job was only half done after adding further lustre to his reputation with the 31st Test century of his career. Tendulkar reached three figures off 160 deliveries with two runs to extra cover off paceman Darren Powell, the first time he has made a hundred at Eden Gardens.
But he will be looking to add to his 114 not out on the final day with India only 56 runs ahead. "This hundred came at the right time because the team was in bad shape. When I went in to bat, we needed the runs. "But the last day will be crucial. I have to try and carry on and we have to ensure that we don't lose wickets in the first session and also score runs. "The result is very hard to predict," he commented. India have already secured the series following victories in Mumbai and Madras, but do not want to finish with a defeat.
Tendulkar's innings drew praise from West Indies youngster Marlon Samuels, who scored his maiden Test century earlier in the day, but the tourists remain hopeful of victory. "As a cricketer, Sachin is my role model. His knock will help me learn more. I like everything about Sachin, on and off the field," he said. "I was dying to get a chance to bat against the Indian spinners, who were bowling well in this series. I was under a lot of personal pressure when I went in to bat. "Eden Gardens is a great place to score the first century. It's a different atmosphere here. There was a massive crowd and plenty of noise, which could ruin any batsman's confidence." He added: "We are looking forward to winning this match. We have to get the remaining batsmen out and I'm sure we will do that." |
