| Thursday, 30 May, 2002, 10:51 GMT 11:51 UK Gilchrist receives warning Muralitharan is Sri Lanka's chief weapon Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist has been reprimanded following comments he made about Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan's bowling action. Gilchrist, vice-captain of the national Test and one-day sides, appeared before an Australian Cricket Board disciplinary panel at Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday. He was charged with breaching Section 1, Rule 10 of the ACB's Code of Behaviour which prohibitis players from making comments "detrimental to the interests of the game".
It followed remarks attributed to him following a lunch at the the Carlton Aussie Rules football club last weekend. Gilchrist was quoted as saying: "I think technically if you read the rules, I think he's not quite within them." 'No malice intended' Muralitharan is Sri Lanka's leading wicket-taker with 412 victims in Tests and although he was twice no-balled for throwing by Australian umpires, his action has been cleared by the International Cricket Council.
The disciplinary hearing lasted for three and a half hours. ACB chief executive James Sutherland admitted the penalty imposed was "at the very low end" of the scale. He added: "The deputy senior commissioner found that although Adam's comments were made innocently and in good faith, they were also detrimental to the game of cricket. "The ACB recognises Adam's outstanding contribution to the image and success of Australian cricket through his conduct both on and off the field. "The Code of Behanviour is in place for a very important reason. It's fundamental purpose is to promote the image and credibility of the game of cricket and in this case, particularly in the context of the ACB's relationship with other nations." Gilchrist declined to comment following the hearing, but has apologised to Muralitharan for any offence he may have caused. Butcher waits The England and Wales Cricket Board has yet to decide what action it will take over newspaper comments made by batsman Mark Butcher about Sri Lankan paceman Ruchira Perera. In his column for the Croydon Advertiser, Bucther said: "Having faced him for some time, I can say that he definitely straightens his arm." Perera was reported to the International Cricket Council following the recent first Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's. He is now working to re-model his action and has been left out of the team for the second Test at Edgbaston. | See also: 27 May 02 | Cricket 26 May 02 | Cricket 23 Jan 99 | Cricket 05 Oct 00 | Cricket 06 Mar 02 | Cricket Top Cricket stories now: Links to more Cricket stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
