| Monday, 27 May, 2002, 08:56 GMT 09:56 UK Gilchrist in hot water Sri Lanka walked off when Muralitharan was no-balled in Perth in 1999 The Australian Cricket Board has charged Adam Gilchrist with breaching its code of conduct for questioning the legality of Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan's bowling action. Gilchrist was reported as suggesting Muralitharan was a "chucker" during a weekend lunch with the Carlton Aussie Rules football club. "After reading the statements attributed to Adam, I rang him and asked him to provide me with details about the accuracy of the comments and how they came to be in the public domain," said ACB chief executive James Sutherland.. "After considering Adam's explanation, I have issued a charge under the ACB Code of Behaviour. An AB commissioner will determine whether Adam's comments are in breach of the code."
Wicket-keeper Gilchrist is currently ranked as the world's top Test batsman and is vice-captain of the Australian Test and one-day sides. Muralitharan is Sri Lanka's leading wicket-taker with 412 victims in Tests and although he was twice no-balled for throwing by Australian umpires, his action has been cleared by the International Cricket Council. But Gilchrist was quoted as saying: "I think technically if you read the rules, I think he's not quite within them." Sutherland insisted that Gilchrist's remarks did not represent the viw of the ACB. "Muttiah Muralitharan's action has been cleared by the International Cricket Council after an exhaustive review.
"The ICC has a rigid and comprehensive process in place to continually assess the legality of bowling actions and the ACB supports this process," he added. Sri Lanka team manager Chandra Shaffter said Gilchrist had already spoken to Muralitharan to discuss the matter. "Gilchrist called Murali yesterday and explained that what has come out is not exactly what he meant to say or indeed what he said. "He told Murali he is considering taking action against those who distorted his comments. Murali was happy with Gilchrist's explanation and as far as we are concerned the matter is now closed." |
