![]() | Thursday, 5 October, 2000, 10:20 GMT 11:20 UK Hair trimmed after protest ![]() Hair will not officiate any of Sri Lanka's matches Australian cricket umpire Darrell Hair will not officiate in any of Sri Lanka's ICC Trophy matches following a protest from the island's cricket board. "The ICC (International Cricket Council) has informed us that they have re-assigned umpires for Sri Lanka's matches, because we had a problem with Hair," Chandrishan Perera, media manager of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL). Perera said the BCCSL had lodged a strong protest over Hair, who called Sri Lanka's star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan for throwing during a test match in Melbourne in 1995. Perera said the new umpires' roster would take effect from the second round of the tournament where Hair was assigned to officiate a match which would involve Sri Lanka if they qualify. Muralitharan was subsequently cleared by the ICC while Hair was found guilty of misconduct last year for comments on the incident in his autobiography "Decision Maker". Muralitharan conceded only nine runs in 10 overs as he helped Sri Lanka to beat West Indies by 108 runs in their first ICC trophy match at Nairobi on Wednesday. | See also: Other top Cricket stories: Links to top Cricket stories are at the foot of the page. | ||
