North wins trap shooting gold

Anita North captured gold for England in the women's single trap event at the Commonwealth Games.

North, who took silver in the trap pairs on Friday, beat Scotland's Shona Marshall into second place as she finally landed gold in Delhi.

In table tennis, England's men's team of Paul Drinkhall, Liam Pitchford and Andrew Baggaley lost 3-1 to Singapore in the team final.

And there was a silver for Scotland in the weightlifting for Peter Kirkbride.

Kirkbride, from Irvine, lifted 144kg in the snatch and 189 in the clean and jerk for a combined score of 333.

That was enough to give him the silver behind Samoan Faavae Faauliuli who lifted 142 and 192 for an overall 334 to take the gold.

"I'm ecstatic," said Kirkbride afterwards. "It's a good result, not just for me, but for everyone that's supported me.

"I really have something to be proud of. It's amazing. I gave it my all."

North, who won silver medals in the pairs and individual events in Manchester eight years ago but missed out on selection for Melbourne, edged out Marshall 93-91 in a closely-fought final.

She shot 24, 22 and a maximum 25 to reach the final as the leading qualifier, and her score there of 22 won the title by a margin of two targets.

The 47-year-old from Cambridge competed in India in the Commonwealth Championships in February, winning team gold but failing to reach the singles final and used that experience to good effect.

"I'm pleased because I treated this event as just another day in the office - although it was a very successful day," she said.

"I knew I was in the lead going into the final, but I tried just to do my own thing after that.

"I actually realised I had won when I hit the 24th target and all my team mates started cheering. I had to concentrate pretty hard before hitting the last one.

"Straight after the final I rang my husband Tony, who is back home. He couldn't believe it - but he'd better believe it!

"I have enjoyed these Games from the start. They have been fabulous - I have really enjoyed India - and now I've gone out on a high. I'm going to try and get around to see some of the other sports now."

Scotland's Jonathan Hammond won silver and England's James Huckle took bronze in the 50m rifle 3-position singles.

Hammond scored 1255.3 to finish behind India's Gagan Narang, who took his fourth gold of the Games with 1262.2.

It was Hammond's second medal following a bronze in the rifle position pairs with Neil Stirton.

Huckle took the bronze with 1254.9 to secure his fourth medal in Delhi following two silvers in pairs events and an individual air rifle bronze.

In the table tennis competition, Pitchford gave England the perfect start against Singapore with a five-set victory over Ning Gao.

But Drinkhall and Baggaley both lost in four sets and then Drinkhall was beaten 9-11 11-9 11-1 11-7 by Gao to leave England with the silver.

England also won two bronze medals in the wrestling through Sasha Madyarchyk in the 60kg category and Leon Rattigan in the 92kg.
