England's Jackson storms to walking gold

Jo Jackson won England's 20th gold of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi with victory in the women's 20k race.

Middlesbrough-born Jackson became the first British woman to win a major race walk title, ending Australian dominance in the event at recent Games.

The 25-year-old Leeds Metropolitan University student clocked a winning time of one hour 34 minutes 22 seconds.

Claire Tallent, whose husband Jared won the men's event, took silver with England's Lisa Kehler in fourth.

It was a sweet victory for Jackson, who was disqualified in last year's World Championships in Berlin.

"That was amazing - I have dreamt of this moment so often for so long," she said.

"I really put everything into this and I wasn't expecting to win by so much."

Preparation was key, according to Jackson.

"Before going to Doha, I spent three weeks training in a heat chamber at Leeds Metropolitan Carnegie, for an hour a day I walked on a treadmill at 60% humidity and 32C and that definitely helped," she said.

Kehler was content with her fourth-placed finish.

The 43-year-old from Wolverhampton said: "Well I can't argue with that can I? Fourth place with a season's best at my age.

"I did struggle a bit there towards the end because I went so hard in the middle to make up time, but it's not too bad."

Australia's Tallent won the men's race ahead of team-mate Luke Adams while India's Harminder Singh set a new personal best time to take the bronze.

England's Luke Finch was 10th, Tom Bosworth 11th and Alex Wright 13th.
