Hockey women book semi-final spot

England women sealed their place in the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games hockey tournament, while the men also edged closer towards the last four.

Goals from Nicola White, Alex Danson and Georgina Twigg secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Malaysia.

James Tindall's hat-trick and goals from Richard Mantell and Rob Moore goals gave England's men a 5-3 win over New Zealand in a thrilling match.

But Scotland's women went out after losing 5-2 to Australia in Pool A.

Australia's victory saw them top their pool and they will face England in the last four on Monday with New Zealand up against South Africa in the other semi-final.

As well as Tindall's heroics England's men were also thankful to goalkeeper James Fair who produced some stunning saves.

"We've relied on Simon Mantell for most of our goals so far so it's nice to take the heat off him a bit," said Tindall.

"It's important we get as many people as possible on the scoresheet because four games in five days is hard work but the spirit and morale in this team is brilliant."

India kept their semi-final hopes alive with a 4-0 win over Scotland to leave the Scots waiting for their first win of the competition.

Host nation Indian will now have to win their remaining group match against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday for a place in the semis.

England's women needed just a draw to progress and were never in danger of missing out on a place in the last four after White's goal, just before half time.

"I'm happy with how the girls managed to play in difficult conditions today," said head coach Danny Kerry.

"Rather than coming at us to try and squeeze into the semi finals, Malaysia were trying to avoid losing by more than two goals so it was a case of seeing if we could break them down without being exposed on the counter attack.

"We weren't as penetrative as I would have liked and we only had a few penalty corners but when we took a couple of risks going forward in the second half we got the goals."

For 19-year-old Twigg, her goal was her first in senior international hockey.

"It's fantastic to get my first goal here at the Commonwealth Games," said Twigg.

"It's even better that it has helped us get to the semi finals. The corner was practised, I just got myself into the right place at the right time."
