Houvenaghel won silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics

Cornwall-based cyclist Wendy Houvenaghel has won the British 3000m individual pursuit title just days before going to the Commonwealth Games.

Houvenaghel claimed gold in the event at the British National Track Championships ahead of Sarah Storey.

The 35-year-old finished the the pursuit race in a time of 3:30.612.

Houvenaghel, who won silver in the individual pursuit at the Beijing Olympics, will now represent Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games.

She said: "I hadn't done a lot of preparation for the event as I have been aiming to peak for the Commonwealth Games and slowly working my way towards that.

"I feel I'm pretty much where I need to be this far out from that competition, so I'm pleased."
