Luger played for England Sevens in South Africa and the USA this year |
Dan Luger has not made England's Commonwealth Games rugby sevens squad. The 31-year-old winger, who was part of England's Rugby World Cup-winning squad in 2003, was part of the initial 15-man squad but has not made the final 12.
England Sevens coach Mike Friday admitted it had been tough to leave out Luger and the other players who missed the cut, Ben Lewitt and David Strettle.
"Every one of the 15 players we brought here deserved a place and it was a very tough decision to make," said Friday.
"Although only 12 of them will get to play we are very much a 15-man squad and the three players not playing will be just as important to the success of this squad as those on the pitch.
"That's what being a team is all about."
Luger scored 24 tries in 38 Test appearances for England but has not represented his country at senior level since the 2003 World Cup quarter-final win over Wales.
England have been drawn alongside Australia, Cook Islands and Sri Lanka in the pool stages of the Commonwealth sevens competition, which takes place at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne on Thursday and Friday.
