Jason Cook made the first defence of his IBO lightweight title by outpointing Kevin Bennett in Bridgend on Saturday night.

The judges scored the fight 116-112 and 115-113 twice in Cook's favour after a disappointing bout.

Hartlepool's Bennett was defensive throughout and the Welshman deserved the decision with his higher work-rate.

Bennett is now 15-4, while Cook moves to 23-1 and is now firmly established in the WBC's top 10.

On the undercard, welterweight James Hare got back to winning ways with an impressive second-round stoppage of Welsh champion Jason Williams.

It was the Hare's first fight since being taken apart by Mexican Cosme Rivera and midway through the second round the Huddersfield man floored Williams with a classy left hook counter.

The Welshman got to his feet to receive a standing eight count but "The Roberttown Rocket" followed up with a barrage of accurate punches and the referee stepped in.
