Jason Cook claimed the IBO lightweight title |
Maesteg fighter Jason Cook won the vacant IBO lightweight crown in impressive style with a seventh-round knockout of Argentine champion Ariel Olveira. 'The Power' fighting before his adoring Welsh fans at the Bridgend Recreation Centre, dropped the visitor in rounds one, two and five with shots from the left and right.
But it was Cook's left that was the real danger for Olveira and the former European lightweight champion finished the contest with a cracking left hook in the seventh.
Olveira (19-4-2; 10 KOs) tried desperately to beat the count but 'La Pantera' was in no condition to continue.
Cook, 27, had been in charge throughout against a fighter many felt would provide the Welshman with a tough test.
The Argentine unveiled a day-glo green hairstyle as he entered the ring, but he might as well have painted a target instead with the ease Cook connected with his punches.
On the undercard, Hartlepool's Kevin Bennett survived a torrid last two rounds to take the Commonwealth lightweight title from Michael Muya of Kenya.
The former soldier won comfortably on the scorecard with a 116-113 decision in his favour, but spent the last two rounds stumbling around the ring completely exhausted.
Somehow he survived but had to be taken back to the dressing room before receiving his belt, and was later taken to hospital as a precaution.
