Warren hails Welsh renaissance
Frank Warren and Joe Calzaghe
Warren says Calzaghe's success has boosted boxing in Wales
Boxing promoter Frank Warren says that the fight game in Wales is going through a golden era, invigorated by the success of Joe Calzaghe.

"Welsh boxing is in great condition, it's enjoying a renaissance," Warren told BBC Sport Wales.

"Joe Calzaghe is recognised throughout the world as the best in his division and when you get one champion like that it just drags the whole region along - the same thing is happening now in Manchester with Ricky Hatton.

"Swansea's Enzo Maccarinelli has a version (WBU) of the world cruiserweight title and he has just been voted Young Boxer of the Year, that's a great accolade.

"Enzo is a freak, really, he's 6'4" and doesn't look facially like a boxer, but the power he has in both hands is phenomenal.

Tony Doherty is a great prospect and Gavin Rees will fight for a title in the new year
Frank Warren
"His last two fights have been great, and if he can get a little bit of luck in his career he could go on to great things.

"If he can achieve just half of what Joe has done it would be fantastic."

It is not just Wales' top two boxing names who are giving Warren cause for excitement, though.

"Young Tony Doherty is a great prospect and then there's Gavin Rees who will fight for a title in the new year," said the promoter.

Jamie Arthur
Warren tips Jamie Arthur for success
"Jamie Arthur won gold at the last Commonwealth Games and now he's really starting to come on, while Bradley Pryce will show what a good fighter he is when his ban comes to an end.

"There are a lot of other good young fighters coming through and it all helps us to put those big shows on."

Warren feels that the healthy fight scene in Wales is a sign of the upturn in the sport's fortunes throughout the country.

"We're getting bigger crowds in Britain than ever before," he said. "It's not just London where we're able to put on the major shows now, it's all round the country."

Warren will bring another major international line-up to Wales on 6 December when Calzaghe makes the 14th defence of his WBO super-middleweight title at the Cardiff Ice Rink against Armenia's Mger Mkrtchyan.
