Calzaghe may escape the British winters in Florida |
Joe Calzaghe has revealed he may base himself in the United States in an effort to break into the big time. The WBO super-middleweight champion told BBC Wales that he is considering buying a winter home - possibly in Florida - for himself and his family.
"If I get a couple of fights in America I may base myself out there with my family," said the 31-year-old.
"Given the opportunity of fighting the top Americans, I may have to go to and fight in their backyard."
Earlier this month the Newbridge-born fighter revealed he will move up a division to light-heavy, hopefully there to get the big fights against American 'names' that have so far eluded him.
Calzaghe must first defend his current title for the 14th time against Armenian challenger Mger Mkrtchyan in Cardiff on 21 February.
"He's a strong fighter, a good puncher - dangerous - this guy is definitely going to come and try," Calzaghe added.
"Like most Armenians and Russians he's very tough, comes to win, so I've got to stamp my authority from the opening bell.
"But I'm training hard, I'm in great condition and you'll see the best of Joe Calzaghe on the 21st of February."
If that is successful, then his first opponent at light-heavyweight could be against that weight division's WBO champion Julio Gonzalez.
